Chapter Twelve

The Innocents’ Pain

Iris walked into the wooden stable. Fox, Thunder, and Prince stood awaiting their morning grooming. The wind carried the sound of nature through the stable, allowing for fresh air to ventilate the horse’s natural odor. Prince, the largest and most stubborn of the three, stared at Iris, the only one not persuaded by Iris’s predatory aroma.

“Yes, I know boy, you’re the first to go today,” Iris said gently as she rubbed the side of his neck. She grabbed a brush from her bucket as she began to curry the copper animal. With a long day ahead—full of the uneventful farm work she accomplished with the Michael family—her mind began to drift. Memories flooded her mind of her arrival in this foreign place, and she found herself reminiscing about her first steps off the plane into such an immense land.

“Welcome to Texas,” the woman at the terminal had said with a smile on her face as Iris exited the plane.

It was a world she had never been privy to; the technology and smells were all new. Unlike the people on the island, these people had no control over their thoughts and emotions, which nearly overwhelmed her.

Wolves in general didn’t like crowded places. Most lived in secluded areas to avoid people as often as possible. Sure, there were a few odd cases, but lone wolves typically stayed isolated with nature, while wolf packs usually lived in small towns.

Iris, however, didn’t plan on living in the wilderness alone. She wanted to be somewhere small, yet connected to any resources she might require. Therefore, she chose Texas. There were plenty of people, and the vast expanses of land would make it much easier to hide from any would-be pursuers.

But, all the same…

I don’t like this, Iris had thought as she made her way to pick up the small amount of luggage she carried—mainly some currency and new clothes to get her started—into her new life.

The airport was huge. She thought it was absurd she had to take another form of transportation just to reach her bags. As she got on the airport train, Iris felt a young man staring at her from across the room. The man thought he was slick, checking her out with her back turned, but she could smell his lust from across the car.

“Next up, Port C Baggage Claims,” a pre-recorded voice announced as the information was also spelled out across a digital sign.

As Iris got off the train, she felt her would-be admirer leave the train as well, following her to the baggage area. As she waited for her bags, Iris smelled the additional aroma of courage as he approached her.

“Hello… how’s it going?” the young boy said nervously.

Enjoying her role, Iris simply stared at him for a long while. Eventually, a smile crossed her face.

“I’m well! What can I do for you?” Iris snapped imperiously. A little fun didn’t hurt anyone.

The memory put a smile on Iris’s face as she rubbed the gorgeous animal. Reaching down to grab her phone, she realized she had a few hours before anyone else would awaken.
